What Is Saiful Malook Lake?

Saiful Malook is a high-altitude glacial lake located 9 km northeast of Naran town in the Kaghan Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It sits at the foot of Malika Parbat, which at 5,290 metres is the highest peak in the Kaghan Valley, and is fed entirely by glacial meltwater.

The lake's most striking feature is its colour. In direct sunlight, the water appears an extraordinary shade of turquoise or deep blue depending on the light and season. Three sides of the lake are bounded by steep, snow-dusted mountains, creating an amphitheatre effect that gives the site an almost theatrical grandeur.

At 3,224 metres, Saiful Malook is one of the highest lakes in Pakistan and among the most visited natural sites in the country. Despite the volume of visitors during peak season, the scale of the setting means the lake never feels overcrowded.

The Legend of Saiful Malook

The lake takes its name from one of Pakistan's most beloved folk legends, immortalised in the 19th-century Punjabi poem by Mian Muhammad Bakhsh titled "Saiful Malook."

The story tells of an Egyptian prince, Saiful Malook, who dreams of a fairy princess (pari) named Badr-ul-Jamal. Drawn by his dream, the prince travels to the mountains of what is now Pakistan and arrives at this very lake, where he finally encounters the fairy. However, their love is opposed by a powerful demon (jinn) named Sayyad, who has long held the princess captive.

After trials and perseverance, Prince Saiful Malook ultimately defeats the demon and is reunited with his beloved. The poem, written as a romantic allegory with deep spiritual undertones, remains one of the most treasured works of Punjabi literature, and the lake has become a pilgrimage site of sorts for those who know the story.

"The lake of Saiful Malook is not merely a natural wonder. It is a place where legend and landscape exist in perfect harmony, each making the other more beautiful."

Best Time to Visit Saiful Malook Lake

The lake is accessible between late May and October, depending on snowmelt and road conditions. Within that window, different months offer distinct experiences.

Late May to JuneEarly Season

Snow still surrounds the lake, creating a striking contrast with the water. Visitor numbers are lower and the landscape feels wilder. Some years the jeep track may only open in early June.

Best for: For photographers and those who prefer fewer crowds.

July to AugustPeak Season

The most popular months. The jeep track is fully operational, the surrounding meadows are green, and the lake is at its most accessible. Expect the highest visitor numbers of the year.

Best for: For families and first-time visitors who want the safest conditions.

September to OctoberLate Season

An excellent time to visit. Crowds thin considerably after mid-September, the light becomes softer and more atmospheric, and temperatures remain manageable. First snow occasionally dusts the peaks by October.

Best for: For those seeking atmosphere and quieter conditions.

How to Get to Saiful Malook Lake

Step 1: Get to Naran

All visits to Saiful Malook begin in Naran town. The town is approximately 240 km from Islamabad and is reached by road via Mansehra and the Kaghan Valley highway. Most visitors drive from Islamabad in 5 to 6 hours, or from Lahore in 7 to 8 hours. See our full Naran Valley Travel Guide for detailed route information.

Step 2: Hire a Jeep in Naran

Private vehicles are not permitted beyond a certain point on the road to Saiful Malook. All visitors must hire a jeep from Naran bazaar. Jeep stands are located throughout the town and are difficult to miss. Return trip prices are typically negotiated on the spot and range from PKR 2,500 to PKR 4,000 depending on vehicle size and season.

Jeeps carry multiple passengers, so if you are travelling solo or as a couple, the driver will often fill remaining seats with other visitors, reducing the individual cost.

Step 3: The Jeep Ride

The 9 km jeep track from Naran to Saiful Malook is steep, narrow, and genuinely exciting. The road climbs sharply through rocky terrain with increasingly dramatic views opening up as you ascend. The journey takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on conditions and stops along the way.

The jeep track can be temporarily closed after heavy rain due to landslide risk. If you are visiting during or after rainfall, check with your hotel or the local jeep stand before setting out.

The immediate lakeshore area has basic facilities: a handful of food stalls, a few basic cafes, and toilet facilities. There are horses and ponies available for rides around the lakeshore. The atmosphere is vibrant and social during peak season, with a mix of local and international visitors.

Allow at least 2 to 3 hours at the lake to fully absorb the setting. Walk the shoreline, find a quieter vantage point away from the main arrival area, and if conditions allow, simply sit and watch the light change on the water.

Trekking to Saiful Malook Lake

For those who prefer to earn their views, a well-established trekking trail connects Naran town to Saiful Malook Lake. The route climbs approximately 800 metres over 9 km and takes most walkers between 3 and 4 hours uphill, with the descent taking around 2 to 2.5 hours.

The trail is generally well-defined but steep in the upper section. Good footwear with ankle support is strongly recommended. The high altitude means the pace should be slow and steady, particularly for those not acclimatised.

Many visitors choose a hybrid approach: taking the jeep up to the lake and walking part or all of the way back down, combining the convenience of the jeep with the satisfaction of the descent on foot.

Essential Tips for Visiting Saiful Malook Lake

  • 1Start early. Jeeps begin running from Naran at around 6 AM. An early departure means cooler temperatures, better light for photography, and fewer people at the lake.
  • 2Dress for cold. Even in July, temperatures at 3,224 metres are cool and the wind off the lake can be bitingly cold. Bring a warm jacket regardless of the forecast.
  • 3Apply sunscreen generously. At altitude, UV radiation is significantly more intense than at sea level. Reapply frequently.
  • 4Bring your own water and snacks. While there are basic food stalls at the lake, quality and variety are limited. Bottled water is available but expensive.
  • 5Respect the environment. The lake and its surroundings are ecologically sensitive. Take all litter back with you and follow the designated paths.
  • 6Book your jeep in advance during July and August. Demand for vehicles peaks during these months and waiting times at the jeep stand can be long without a prior arrangement.
  • 7If you are travelling with young children or elderly family members, allow extra time and take the jeep both ways.
